Eyes That Are Not Cast Down

You, like a drum
clanging, banging,
yammering on

Eyes that wince with each pop
Ears that are numb with ringing

With the sun drowning in front of us
Under the shade of a tree

Pushing my feet into the cement,
In the presence of watchful eyes

I told you so
Told you straight from
my mouth, from my gut

Your voice started strong

like a steel drum

Full bodied and sure,

Eventually, slowing
to a slow and subtle

brush stroke

I shut you out then,

Never able to before –
there was some angle
that kept me moored
to you

All it took,
was an afternoon

to break free

I told you
told you
it would be

and it is.
